Set yourself up financially in Portugal before someone does it for you

In 5 min you'll know: how to get your (Portuguese tax-ID number), NISS (Portuguese social-security number), bank account and tax address in your first month in Portugal

Arriving in Portugal without a is like arriving without an address — you exist, but officially you're nowhere. The Tax Identification Number is the first document you need, and it's not optional. Without it, you can't open a bank account, sign a tenancy agreement, invoice as a self-employed worker, or have your employer report your deductions to the State. In Lesson 1 we looked at how to read your payslip and identify each deduction line. Here you'll understand what's behind those lines — and what you lose if you don't sort out your situation from day one.

Before you continue: what is (Portugal's personal income tax) and why might the withholding on your payslip be too high — or too low?

(Answer in the next paragraph.)

You can get your NIF at any Loja do Cidadão or tax office in a few minutes, with your passport or residence permit. After the NIF, you need a — the Social Security Identification Number. This is the number that ensures your Segurança Social deductions are counted. Without a NISS, you can work for months or years without any deduction being recorded, which means in the future you won't be entitled to sick pay, unemployment benefit, or a pension. The NISS is assigned automatically when you start working as an employee, but if you're self-employed, you have to request it yourself.

A bank account is the third pillar. In Portugal, salaries are paid by bank transfer in the vast majority of cases. Without an account, you depend on someone paying you in cash — and that dependency is a risk. In Lesson 5 we chose a bank with low fees and learned to compare offers. For new residents, most banks require a NIF, proof of address and identification document. Some offer accounts specifically for foreigners with simplified processes — but it's worth reading the terms, because fees can be higher after the promotional period.

Your tax address is another invisible step with real consequences. The address linked to your NIF is the one the State uses to send you tax notifications. If you don't update your address when you move house, you may not receive payment notices, fines, or IRS alerts. And IRS in Portugal applies universally to tax residents — if you live in Portugal for more than 183 days a year, you're a tax resident and must declare global income, including income earned outside Portugal.

There are also signs of exploitation that no new resident should ignore: an employer who doesn't provide a payslip, who pays in cash without making deductions, who withholds your passport or documents, or who charges you "fees" for legalisation. None of this is normal. These are violations of basic labour rights and should be reported to the Authority for Working Conditions.

The rule is this: in your first month in Portugal, get your NIF, request your NISS, open a bank account in your name, and register your tax address. Anyone who sets up their financial life intentionally leaves no room for others to do it abusively.
